PETITION: Lower the housing targets to save greenbelt

Greenbelt under threat from the ToriesThe Conservative Government are not listening to residents or to our council. It is clear that the government-imposed housing targets cannot be met without building on swathes of greenbelt.

More houses do need to be built, particularly affordable housing, however the Government needs to listen to the real concerns of residents and find a fairer balance.

The cause of the disporpotionally high housing development targets in Three Rivers is because of a 'standard methodology', a government formula using a housing need assessment based on Office of National Statistics data from 2014. More recent data suggests a lower need but government rejected the more up-to-date calculation be used!

Local Conservative Councillors have refused to back our call for lower and fairer housing targets, putting greenbelt at risk.

The Three Rivers area is well over 70% Green Belt. The land that has been put forward for development that is not in Green Belt can provide less than 20% of that assessed housing need (under 2000 homes), requiring the remainder to be allocated on precious green belt (more than 9000 homes).

Therefore, we are calling for the Council:

1) To request an urgent meeting with the Local Government Secretary, The Right Honourable Robert Jenrick MP to discuss reductions to this unacceptable target;

2) To write to the three MPs that serve different parts of Three Rivers asking them to confirm that they reject the Government's 'standard methodology' as it harms the green belt and damages local communities and that they call on Robert Jenrick to agree a lower target for this District.
